When I was a girl, our family, including my brothers, parents, and grandparents, would often take trips to Myrtle Beach, where we spent our vacations at Ocean Lakes. The experience was surreal. We were all so happy, and it always felt like one final bang before school began. It was a special feeling, a sense of togetherness and belonging.
This year, both my mom and I graduated, me from high school, and her from nursing school. We felt we deserved a trip filled with good memories, and after some planning, we decided on a short getaway to Virginia Beach with my Gram.

When we arrived, there was a small bump in the road, but we quickly realized that being together mattered more than where we stayed. It wasn’t about the place, it was about the people.
Our first night, we strolled along the boardwalk and ate at Mellow Mushroom, a classic pizza joint with an alternative vibe. The place had gorgeous artwork and a chill, hip atmosphere. I loved relaxing with Gram and Mom. I kicked off the night with a Pineapple Express Mocktail, sweet pineapple mixed with just the right amount of spice. It was delicious.
The next morning, we woke up early, hit the pool, and later rented beach chairs. While Gram stayed back to enjoy the pool, Mom and I spent time on the beach, chatting and soaking in the peacefulness. The ocean sounds and scenic view made everything feel calm and right. There's just something about sand between your toes and reclining on a cozy towel that sets the perfect mood. We had lunch by the pool, followed by ice cream at Ben & Jerry’s, classic vacation vibes.
The third day was similar to the last, but we spent most of our time at the pool. I took a couple of strolls along the beach, letting the waves crash over my feet. We saw dolphins, and I even saw my first-ever baby crab. It was adorable! That night, we had dinner at Isle of Capri, known for its Italian veal dishes. I ordered the Sicilian: mozzarella over veal and eggplant, served with a side of pasta. I was so sad when it was gone, it was that good. The best part, though, was the view. We sat right above the ocean, watching the waves crash against the shore.
One of my favorite parts of the trip was simply being with my mom and Gram. We laughed so hard at times that our stomachs hurt, the best kind of laugh. I love being with them, caring for them, and even making them memorize my stuffed animal's name.
On our final day, the weather was a bit rainy. After a short time at the pool and one last beach stroll, we went to an early dinner at Waterman’s Surfside Grille. Mom and I had seafood platters, while Gram chose a hot honey-glazed chicken dish. Our plates came loaded with scallops, shrimp, mashed potatoes, sautéed vegetables, and lump crab meat. I had a Coconut Mock-arita, sweet coconut blended with tropical fruits. For dessert, we visited the famous Sweet Spot, where we shared giant milkshakes, funnel cakes, and more ice cream. It was the perfect sweet ending to our trip.
On the ride home, I found myself reflecting on the gorgeous scenery, the fun memories, and the beautiful time I got to spend with my family before moving into Seton Hill. I’ll always treasure this summer. As it comes to a close, I’m grateful for my family, my friends, and, as always, Coffee Talk.
Thanks for reading. <3
