Halloween is by far my favorite season to work through. Even though balancing work, school, and studying (all with barely any sleep) can be a rigorous task, it’s always important to stay focused on what’s next. I love Halloween not just because it kicks off my favorite stretch of holidays, but also because of the timing and the people I’m surrounded by.
Living on my own has been a challenge. College, in many ways, is much harder than high school. For so long, I stayed in the comfort of my home with a pretty steady routine, online school during the day, and work almost every evening. Although I miss my part-time job at Kohl’s, I’m grateful that working at Maestro Minds alone now gives me more time for myself.
During those exhausting weeks when I’m completely worn out, I remind myself to look forward to the good that’s ahead. We all need an anchor to hold on to during stressful times. In honor of Halloween, a holiday so many of us love, it’s a season filled with tricks, treats, and fun memories. With Halloween falling on a Friday this year, I knew I’d be spending the day with my Pap and my dog, Millie, which is always the best way to start the celebration. There’s no better feeling than walking through the door and being greeted by Millie’s warm (and slobbery) welcome.
Halloween looks different for everyone. Some throw big costume parties, others hit the streets to trick-or-treat, and some prefer to stay in bed with a marathon of those awful slasher movies that somehow never get easier to watch. My favorite part, though, is taking a drive through town to admire all the giant Spirit Halloween decorations and seeing the trees turn shades of orange and red. It’s such a beautiful time of year, especially from the top of Seton Hill where the trees on the ride down are absolutely breathtaking.
This year, with school chaos leaving me a bit drained, I’ve decided to have a cozy night in with my family. After grabbing Chick-fil-A for dinner and painting pumpkins with Pap in the chilly weather, we’ve come inside to rest. As I’m writing this, The Strangers, 2008, is playing in the background, one of my favorite thrillers that somehow still gets sequels to this year. Nights like this, where nothing is needed except relaxation and a little fun, are my absolute favorite.
With that being said, whether you’re out with family, at a Halloween bash, or stealing some of your sibling’s favorite candy, I’m wishing you a night filled with safety, comfort, and a little magic. I can’t wait for the weeks ahead, to finish the semester strong and dive headfirst into my favorite holiday season!
